Epictetus/Stoicism

I was listening to the song, “Wake Up Call” by Maroon 5, and I actually listened to the lyrics and they reminded me Stoicism and Epictetus. Basically, the song is about how a man loses his girlfriend because she cheated on him and he reacts in a violent way, then the song goes on to the man not understanding why the girl did what she did because if she was feeling neglected in any way she could have just spoken up about the issue. Anyways, this reminded me of stoicism and Epictetus because of how each of the individuals reacted. No one can control what situations we will have to face in life, but how we go about them defines how well we will live life because Epictetus believes that we control our emotions/impulses. For example, the girl in the song. If she had just faced the issue she was dealing with and chose to control her emotions and the way she acted, things would have possibly played out better in her favor and the relationship as a whole.

  1. Glad you're getting the discussion started, Kate! It is interesting to think about how songs relate to disturbing emotions like anger, jealousy, sadness, and hate. Is the act of writing them or listening to them merely a way to indulge emotions that it would be better to eliminate? Or do these songs instead offer us a way to work through emotions? If so, how?

    1. I think songs are a good way to let out emotions like anger. When you are angry you can use that anger to create something better, like music. People out there who are going through the same things as you can then use that song to help themselves get through it. Nietzsche believed emotions like anger would make you stronger and could stimulate creativity.

    2. I think that songs are a way to work through our emotions. I feel like in the world now you can literally find a song about anything that relates to what you are going through. In a sense they could potentially make you feel like you are less alone in the situation you are facing? Which might help that individual get through it easier. And I agree with what Hannah said about Nietzsche, however, I believe that negative emotions will only make you stronger if you learn to work through your problems and move on instead of dwelling on the issue.
