The Meaning of Life

What is the meaning of life? This is a question that I don't necessarily think there is any right or wrong answer to. I think the answer is based on one's experiences and expectations in the world. In our book, there was an example that was used that caught my attention. The movie example. One individual saw the whole movie, while the other missed out on the beginning and the end of the movie. Not seeing the whole movie led them to have questions about certain aspects so they could piece it together and make better sense of what was happening in the movie. In this sense, life is like a movie. We walk into it well after its opening scene, and we will have to step out long before the storyline reaches the conclusion. I think this is referring to the lives that we are already living. Walking in after the opening scene is referring to when we are born and the opening scene is everything that happened before our lifetime. The middle section of the movie is the world we live and experience. And the "stepping out long before the storyline reaches the conclusion", is referring to our deaths because we can no longer experience life. I think it difficult to form one right answer because no one is really able to experience all of life, but I think each individual can form an answer that is specifically right to them.

  1. I agree that there is no right or wrong answer. I think that the meaning of life is up to ones interpretation. We all see so many things differently including what we are here to do. It seems that none of us can really come to an answer. I like your explanation and thoughts on this part of the book!

  2. The metaphor makes sense because every time I don't see the beginning of a movie and I just watch the middle part, I am confused and maybe frustrated; that's exactly how life is a lot of the time. And if I don't see the end of the movie, I feel unsatisfied and even more frustrated.

  3. I like the fact that you addressed there is no right and wrong answer at the start. I also really enjoy the movie analogy, because it allows us to make sense of how we're supposed to make sense of life. This allows me to walk through life with the perspective of not anticipating too much in the future and it allows me to recognize my part in the world. I don't get to experience what happens before I'm born and I won't get to experience what happens after I die.

  4. The concept that a movie is similar to life is good, but there is always an story after the movie ends. Movies rarely show that life continues after it ends. There always more to the story. This is my mindset on life as well...even when it ends there is still more to the story. I believe in an afterlife and a lot of the world does, because the thought of nothing else being out there is unimaginable. Many people have different ideas on what the afterlife entails.

  5. I agree with your statement saying that meaning of life is how we experience it. This is why there is no answer to it because we all see life in different perspectives. That is why the meaning of life is the answer that you give for your life because you make the judgement call on it.
